Rhinoplasty Sydney

Aesthetic Nose Reshaping Surgery

Reshaping the nose for aesthetic purposes, correcting nasal conditions for functional purposes or performed as a reconstructive surgery, a rhinoplasty involves moving the bones, cartilage and muscles of the nose.

Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a nose job, is tailored to each patient’s needs. It can be performed to address the appearance of the nose, such as altering the appearance of a bulbous tip, or to address nasal conditions that have occurred after trauma. It can also address airway breathing difficulties, removing blockages and restoring the function of the nose.

This can help to improve conditions such sleep apnoea, or snoring.

Understanding the importance of achieving results that are in harmony with each patient’s unique features, Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Jeremy Hunt has extensive experience performing plastic surgery.

Your consultation at Aesthetic Edge in Sydney

Before undergoing your procedure, you will have a consultation with Dr Jeremy Hunt to discuss your health, expected results and important factors to consider. Consultations can take about 30 to 45 minutes and will cost $300 ($400). Your consultation is an essential part of the surgery process.
During your consultation at Aesthetic Edge, Dr Hunt will discuss:

Your suitability for a rhinoplasty

It’s important to ensure that patients are suitable for the procedure. To assess your suitability, Dr Hunt will ask you about past and current health conditions, lifestyle factors, and your expectations for the results of the surgery. Generally, suitable candidates should be in good general health, non-smokers or able to quit before the procedure, not currently pregnant or breastfeeding, and have realistic expectations for their results.

Your procedure steps

A rhinoplasty will need to be performed with steps that meet each patient’s individual needs. There are different types of nose job procedures, including closed, open, revision or reconstructive rhinoplasty. The type of procedure you need will influence incision placement, procedure types and recovery steps. Dr Hunt will assess your needs and work with you collaboratively to create a personalised procedure plan. Your procedure plan will help you to understand what to expect on the day of your surgery and during the recovery process.

Preparing for a rhinoplasty

Preparing for your procedure will help you to minimise risks and complications. You will receive personalised preparation instructions, tailored to the details of your procedure and your personal needs. Your preparation steps can include stopping taking certain medications, undergoing pre-operative tests, and quitting smoking. Preparing ahead for your recovery can also be beneficial, such as filling prescriptions, organising transport after your procedure and scheduling time off work.

Recovery steps

You will receive personalised recovery instructions that will help you support the healing process after your rhinoplasty. You can also discuss what to expect during your recovery and how soon you can begin to see results. Recovery will involve getting sufficient rest, caring for incision sites, avoiding excessive heat exposure and more. Follow-up appointments will also be important to monitor your healing progress.

Your procedure costs

Since nose job procedures are highly personalised, you will need to discuss your procedure costs after determining the further details of your procedure. Your costs can depend on the type of rhinoplasty you are undergoing, the steps and complexity of the procedure, and procedure time. Costs will cover surgeon’s fees, anaesthesia fees, hospital fees and fees required during recovery.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

A rhinoplasty can be performed for aesthetic, functional or reconstructive purposes. It can address blocked airways, asymmetry, and other common concerns.

The techniques used during your procedure will depend on your personal needs and the structure of your nose. Dr Hunt aims to achieve results that suit each patient’s personal features, considering how the nose may affect the overall appearance of the face.

Types of rhinoplasty

Depending on your needs, different rhinoplasty procedures can be performed. The types of rhinoplasty procedures use different incision placements and techniques.
01

Closed rhinoplasty

A close rhinoplasty is performed using a small incision, placed on the inside of the nose. It may be sufficient to address a deviated septum, or to address aesthetic concerns with the tip of the nose, such as asymmetry or a bulbous tip. Since the incision is placed on the inside of the nose, the procedure will not result in visible scarring.
02

Open rhinoplasty

An open rhinoplasty involves an incision placed at the base of the nose. The procedure may be performed to address large nasal deformities, or a significantly deviated septum.
03

Revision rhinoplasty

A revision rhinoplasty can address the results of a previous rhinoplasty, in the case that patients are not satisfied with their results. It can make minor or moderate changes, depending on the patient’s needs and preferences. The placement of the incision will depend on the needs of the patient and will be discussed during a consultation.
04

Reconstructive rhinoplasty

A reconstructive rhinoplasty is performed to reconstruct nose that has been damaged by previous surgery or trauma. It typically involves tissue grafts or cartilage grafts, taken from the bone of the nose or cartilage from the ear (or donor grafts). Incision placements can be determined during a consultation.

How the procedure is performed

A nose job procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, at the hospital of your choice. While Dr Hunt often chooses an open rhinoplasty, the type of procedure will depend on the condition of your nose and your expected results.

After placing incisions in the previously determined areas, Dr Hunt will address the bones, cartilage and tissue of the nose. Depending on your needs, he may separate the bones and cartilage to adjust the shape. A deviated septum can be adjusted and straightened, and the shape of the nose can be sculpted. The size of the nose can be reduced or increased, or the nose can be narrowed or widened. The angle of the nose can also be addressed.

To finish the procedure, the incisions will be closed, and a splint will be placed over the bridge of the nose. If you had a deviated septum corrected, you will also need temporary post-operative material placed on the inside of your nose.

The procedure can take about two hours, depending on your personalised procedure steps. Patients are generally able to return home to complete their recovery.

Recovering from a rhinoplasty

The details of your recovery period after a nose job will be discussed in further detail during your consultation. Your recovery will depend on the type of procedure you have undergone, the complexity of the procedure and individual factors.

Sometimes, a nose job is performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a facelift or blepharoplasty. If so, this can lengthen the recovery period and involve more instructions to follow to support healing.

Following your recovery instructions will help you to support your body’s healing process, minimise risks and complications and support effective results.

What to expect

After a nose job, it is normal to experience swelling and bruising around the operated area. This can sometimes worsen around three-five days after the procedure, but will then subside throughout your recovery. Swelling and bruising often sufficiently subside within about two weeks of recovery, although some swelling can remain for several months. Immediately after recovery, it is important to get plenty of rest and plan for minimal activity.

Generally, it is advised to take around two weeks off from work, but it will depend on the physical demands of your job. Since you will need to avoid strenuous exercise, such as heavy lifting, for up to four to six weeks, more physically active jobs may require you to take a longer amount of time off work.

You will be able to slowly resume your normal activities, as recommended by Dr Hunt. Limiting certain movements, such as bending your head forward, will help to minimise swelling and support healing. You may be asked to attend follow-up appointments to monitor the progress of your healing.

It can take a few to several months to see your final results, as swelling will need to fully subside. The skin of your nose will also need to fully adjust, which can occur within weeks after your procedure. Results will vary from patient to patient, and the healing speed will depend on the complexity of the procedure, the type of procedure and individual healing.

Recovery instructions

You will discuss your recovery instructions with Dr Hunt, as they will be tailored to the details of your procedure and important personal factors. Your instructions will play an essential role in preventing risks and complications. Instructions typically include to:

Rhinoplasty FAQs

During the actual procedure, you will be under general anaesthesia. As for the recovery, it is normal to experience some pain and discomfort. Pain may be managed with prescription medication if needed. You can discuss how to manage pain throughout your recovery during your consultation.
Your suitability for the procedure will need to be thoroughly assessed during your consultation. Suitability can depend on health history, any present health conditions, lifestyle factors and personal expectations. Candidates should be in good health, non-smokers or willing to quit before surgery, and not pregnant or breastfeeding. Realistic expectations are also important before deciding to undergo the procedure.
The length of your recovery will depend on your individual healing and the complexity of your procedure. Therefore, it will differ from patient to patient, but recovery commonly involves about two weeks of rest at home, and several months for swelling to completely subside.
A rhinoplasty can address the nasal bones and cartilage and can be performed to address the upper and middle parts of the nose. In contrast, a tip rhinoplasty can only address cartilage within the tip of the nose and is performed to address the shape, angle and definition of the tip. The type of rhinoplasty that you will need will depend on the characteristics of your nose and your expected results.
If you are not satisfied with your results, you may be able to undergo revision surgery to make adjustments or further changes. It is generally recommended to wait until swelling has fully subsided before deciding if you are happy with your results, which can take several months.
